Last week we looked at image resolution and applied that to our own work by taking images using digital cameras. This week we will be looking at scanners and the quality of images that are digitised by scanning them into a PC. We will be drawing and scanning images but do not worry if you are not a keen or confident artist as you can trace existing images for this task. Just be sure to put a lot of effort into generating detail in your pictures.
Step 1:
Find a 'large' image, using the Google search function, of a (sensible) subject or object and then print it out onto A4 paper.
Step 2:
Freehand draw or trace the image and then colour it in.
Step 3:
Scan in the drawn image and be sure to make a note or take a photo of the settings you are using to scan in the image. Also, re-scan the original print out. You can scan on the copiers in JPEG and PDF form and you can set the DPI to 100, 200, 300 and 600. Please gather 16 scans.
Step 4:
Compare the quality of the original, printed and scanned and hand-drawn images on a blog post and make a note of all of the resolution and scan settings, where possible. It is probably best to create a PPt. and add each image, with the settings, on a separate slide.
