Capturing Images - Part 1: Digital Cameras

Continuing on from looking at image resolution and for part one of this task, you must capture images in a range of ways, using a range of technology.

Step 1:
You are being asked to use your phone cameras and a Canon DSLR (550D or 700D) to take images, making use of the various resolution setting available to you.

  1. Take a range of images on your phone with every size / resolution setting it has.
  2. Take a range of images on the DSLR using the full range of size / resolution settings it has, including obtaining at least one RAW file.
Step 2:
Image resolution comparisons
Once you have collected a range of images, you must evidence the images and the settings used to capture that image. Open a new Word document, PowerPoint or blog post and put the image file and the setting details (right click file> properties> details) next to each other. When print screening (using the snipping tool) be sure to highlight the file type (logo in top left corner), the resolution and the DPI. You will also see that the image data holds information on what device was used to capture the image. Nifty!

Be sure to PDF and Flipsnak / Issuu / SlideShare and post any Word or PPt files after completion.

Step 3:
Quality comparisons
After posting your image resolution activity above, select three images that showcase a range of resolutions and open them in Photoshop. Zoom into each image exactly the same amount, e.g., 250% and snip the image. Compare each image; what is the loss in quality? How much pixelation is there? If you can present it showing the original image and zoomed portion, that shows consistency.
